Abstract. Demystification of pre-surgical orthodontics

While surgical treatment of complex dentoskeletal malocclusions is extremely complex and often necessitates the use of 3D-imaging technology, the principles of presurgical orthodontics are relatively standardized. The aim of orthodontic preparation in general is to position the teeth in the correct inclination over their supporting bone in the sagittal and transverse direction. On the other hand close interdisciplinary communication between the orthodontist and the oromaxillofacial surgeon is mandatory for determining the final vertical position of the dentition. Bearing this  concept in mind will help to “demystify” presurgical orthodontics and help to achieve excellent treatment outcomes on a routine basis.
